It’s finally warming up around here (and seems to be staying that way), and I’ve never been so excited for spring before! I’ve been really busy so far this year — between family, work and riding sometimes I feel like I never sit down. One thing that really helps me stay sane is checklists and let me tell you, there’s just something soothing about doing some spring cleaning. So this year I wrote up an equestrian spring cleaning checklist, and each trip to the barn I’ve been crossing items off the list — it feels SO GOOD!

I’m even sharing my printable checklist PLUS my favorite cleaning supplies with you FOR FREE. Because that’s how much I love ya’ll 💖

Barn Cleaning Checklist

This section might look a little bit different for some of you, depending on if you have your own barn or if you board somewhere, but there are a number of items you can do for your own horse’s stall and area even if you board.
  • Remove, clean and store water heaters
  • Scrub buckets, feed bins and water troughs
  • Sweep, dust and remove cobwebs
  • Clean gutters and downspouts
  • Clean hayloft
  • Strip stalls, scrub walls and disinfect mats
  • Inspect pastures and fence lines, making any repairs
  • Drag arena and add new footing if needed
  • Test fire extinguishers and smoke detectors

Truck and Trailer Cleaning Checklist

Not everyone has a truck or a trailer, but if you do it’s super important to make sure you’re doing regular maintenance on both and spring is the perfect time to do it. Usually trucks and trailers see the most use when the weather is nice, so make sure you’re ready to hitch up and head out!

  • Check tires and exterior for wear or damage like rust
  • Test lights and brakes
  • Wash exterior and interior (if you can)
  • Sweep any carpeted areas
  • Check under trailer mats for any floor damage
  • Inspect trailer roof and windows for leaks

Horse Cleaning Checklist

I have to admit, this is my favorite part. Is there anything more satisfying than giving your horse their first bath of the year? I love Vetrolin Shampoo and my Jelly Scrubber!
  • Bring out shedding supplies, fly spray, fly wear and grazing muzzle (if needed)
  • Give your horse a bath and a thorough grooming
  • Clip and/or trim any areas that are overgrown
  • Schedule annual spring vaccinations
  • Make a dentist appointment
  • Clean your horse’s sheath or udder
  • Fecal check for internal parasite eggs
  • Do a thorough cleaning of all your tack

Tack and Supply Cleaning Checklist

Getting ready for summer always includes giving my tack a deep clean and making sure everything is in good repair. My favorite supplies are Higher Standards Leather Soap and Akene Conditioner.
  • Clean out and reorganize your tack trunk
  • Wash and repair blankets and coolers
  • Check first aid kit and resupply as needed
  • Inspect supplements and throw out anything expired
  • Thoroughly clean tack
  • Wash and disinfect brushes
  • Organize your horses’ records
